2002 NAIA National Tournament
(ST. CHARLES, Mo.) – As if yesterday’s 3-0 opening round win over Embry-Riddle (Fla.) weren’t a big enough statement, Azusa Pacific made sure it was heard loud a clear today.
After playing through a scoreless first half, the fifth-seeded Cougars erupted for a trio of second half scores to beat fourth-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 3-0, in impressive fashion in the quarterfinals of the 2002 NAIA Women’s Soccer Tournament in St. Charles, Mo.
Azusa Pacific advances to its fifth straight NAIA Final Four and will play either top-seed and tournament host Lindenwood (Mo.) or No. 9-seed Concordia (Ore.) Monday (Nov. 25) at 4:30 p.m. (PST).
Freshman All-GSAC Jolie Nitta scored on a free kick in the 60th minute to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Freshman Megan Cardin added an insurance tally in the 73rd minute off an assist from Rachael Evans. Sophomore Marilyn Montgomery rounded out the scoring with a goal with three minutes to play off an assist by freshman Britany Nauchtrieb. Cougar goalkeeper Melissa Strother earned her eighth shutout of the year.
The Cougars out shot the Blue Raiders, 15-3, including a 10-1 mark in the second half.
With the win, the Cougars, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, improve to 15-3 on the season. Additionally, the Cougars, who are making their fifth straight appearance, are now an impressive 12-2-2 all-time in the NAIA Tournament.
