Concordia (Ore.) 0
Portland, Ore. – In a battle of NAIA top 5-ranked teams, No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific opened its 2003 campaign with a scoreless draw with No. 4-ranked Concordia (Ore.) in Protland, Ore., Friday afternoon.
It was a re-match of last year’s season-opener that Azusa Pacific won 5-1 in Azusa, neither team was able to muster much offense. The Cougars finished with 8 shots, but just 4 on goal, while the Cavaliers countered with 10 shots, 6 on goal.
Cougar sophomore keeper Tiffany Mitchell, making her first career start, collected 6 saves in posting her first career shutout.
The tie is the Cougars’ first season-opening tie since playing to a scoreless draw with NCAA Division II CS Dominguez Hills in the 1999 season opener, a year after the Cougars won the NAIA championship.
The Cougars next face No. 11-ranked Simon Fraser (B.C.) tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in Portland.
