SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific scored a pair of goals late in the first half and made them stand in a 2-0 win at The Master’s Tuesday in Santa Clarita, Calif.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-0-2, 2-0-1 GSAC. The Master’s drops to 4-5-2, 0-3 GSAC.
With 17 minutes left in the first half, a deep cross from freshman Taryn Apo rebounded off a Mustang defenders’ leg and re-directed in the back of the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Cougar lead.
In the final minute of the half, the Cougars doubled their lead on a corner kick and left the rest up to one of the NAIA’s top defensive units to close the door on the Mustangs.
In the 45th minute, sophomore Shannon Coe found the net for her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Megan Cardin, and the Cougars carried a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The Master's best opportunity came when Lindsay Smith broke away from the Cougar defense, but was soon caught in the 18-yard box and was cleared away.
Cougar GK Melissa Strother needed to make just 3 saves to record her 33rd career shutout, which moves her into the NAIA's Top 5 for career shutouts.
The Cougars out-shot the Mustangs, 17-7, including a 10-4 margin in the opening half, and the took 10 corner kicks to The Master's 1.
Azusa Pacific hosts Christian Heritage Saturday at 5 p.m. in Cougar Stadium.
