In the opening game, Azusa Pacific parlayed 2 Eagle miscues into a second-inning run when Camille Hundley scored from second on a Bekah Weisser single up the middle that the Eagle centerfield mishandled, allowing Hundley to turn the corner and continue home and tie the game at 1-1.
In the third inning, the Eagles committed 2 more errors that allowed 2 more Cougar runs to score, first a throwing error that sent Jen Whitten home after she led off the inning with a single up the middle. Erin Halma, who reached base on the first error of the inning, scored on another infield fielding error that put the Cougars up 3-1.
Azusa Pacific managed just 4 hits in the game, 3 of which came in the 2 run-scoring innings.
That was enough for Hundley who picked up here third straight GSAC win and has now gone 21 innings without giving up a run in GSAC play. She struck out 6 and wiggled out of the only jam she had over the final 5 innings by leaving a runner at second base to end the game.
In the nightcap, Biola strung together 5 straight 2-out hits to score 3 first-inning runs and build a cushion that was safe the rest of the night. A pair of Eagle pitchers scattered 5 Cougar hits and left 5 Cougars in scoring position to sidestep any trouble and preserve the shutout victory.
Halma had a pair of extra-base hits for the Cougars, including a 1-out double in the first inning that nearly scored Whitten, who instead was thrown out at the plate. Halma then ripped a 2-out triple, her second of the season, in the third inning but was stranded on base at the inning’s end.
Whitten finished the doubleheader with 3 of the Cougars’ 9 hits while Weisser and Halma each had 2 hits.
With the split, Azusa Pacific moves to 14-10 overall and retains sole possession of fourth place in the GSAC at 4-4. Biola is 10-9 overall, 3-5 in the GSAC.
