AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific freshmen Nicki Sprague and Abry Moreno claimed Pacific West Conference Softball Player of the Week honors after leading the Cougars to a 5-1 record in three conference doubleheaders last week.
Sprague earned Player of the Week honors after becoming the PacWest hits leader with 63 while moving into the conference batting average lead with a .534 season average. On the week, Sprague batted .550 (11-for-20), with 10 runs, 10 RBIs, and four extra-base hits in six games to earn her first Player of the Week award after winning PacWest Newcomer of the Week three previous times this year. Sprague went two-for-three with a home run and four RBIs in last Saturday’s 5-2 win over Hawai‘i Hilo.
Moreno picked up her first weekly conference award as the PacWest Newcomer of the Week, finishing with a .450 batting average (nine-for-20) for the week. She had three-hit games three times, and at one point, Moreno reached base safely in seven consecutive plate appearances. She added two walks and two RBIs on the week, and the Cougars’ leadoff hitter currently ranks ninth in the PacWest in runs scored (28).
