AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific freshman Carly Xepoleas was named the Pacific West Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, and junior shortstop Desiree Chavez picked up Newcomer of the Week honors after leading the Cougars to a 7-1 record last week, which included a split with Dominican and a four-game sweep at Academy of Art in a PacWest road trip through the Bay Area.
For the second time in three weeks, the Cougars produced two players recognized in the HTA PacWest Softball Player of the Week awards.
Chavez, a junior shortstop, became the fifth different Cougar player to pick up one of the weekly conference awards this season. She went 10-for-20 at the plate and tallied five runs, three RBIs, and her five stolen bases to move into the PacWest steals lead with 19. In the Cougars' 14-9 extra-inning victory in Game 2 of the four-game series with Academy of Art, Chavez was four-for-five with three runs scored and two driven in.
Xepoleas became the first PacWest pitcher to earn the Pitcher of the Week honor for a third time this season after winning the award in two of the first three weeks of the season. In four starts this week, the freshman southpaw earned four wins and had a 0.47 ERA in 19 innings pitched. Against Dominican, Xepoleas tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts. After earning both wins in a Friday sweep of Academy of Art, Xepoleas threw another shutout to close out the four-game series sweep. In 35 appearances this season, Xepoleas ranks second in the conference in innings pitched (145.2) and third in ERA (2.07).
