LA VERNE, Calif – Seventeen Azusa Pacific swimmers competed in the non-scoring Leo Invitational hosted by the University of La Verne at Los Flores Pool Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars won 3 of the 9 events in which they competed, and 3 more NAIA qualifying marks were reached during today’s competition.

Freshman Victoria Gibb won the 50-yard free style with a 25.68, while All-American junior Kaylen Hewko took the 100-yard butterfly (59.72) and used a strong kick over the final 4 laps to win the 500-yard free (5:15.58).

While the Cougars were competing against Biola, Concordia, Mills and host La Verne, they had opportunities to punch a few more tickets to the NAIA Championship Meet in March. Junior Malia Garcia finished third in the 200 free and in the process qualified for the NAIAs with a season-best effort of 2:04.11. Gibb and freshman Simone Garcia both qualified in the 100 butterfly with times of 1:00.61 and 1:01.57, respectively.

Azusa Pacific continues through the fall portion of the 2009-10 season with the 2-day Bay Area Invitational hosted by Mills College in Oakland, Calif., next weekend, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 13-14) beginning at noon each.
