AZUSA, Calif. -- Fresh off its NAIA-record sixth consecutive Directors’ Cup title, Azusa Pacific’s athletics program was awarded for its success in the classroom with the announcement of 12 Cougar teams named NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2009-10 school year.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average must include all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible, and 12 of Azusa Pacific’s 17 teams in NAIA championship sports earned Scholar Team recognition.
“I’m very pleased with the way our teams performed on and off the field,” Director of Athletics Bill Odell said. “The announcement of these NAIA Scholar Teams truly reflects how hard our athletes work to represent Azusa Pacific academically and socially, while also competing at the highest level of the NAIA year in and year out.”
Azusa Pacific’s football program was 1 of just 3 NAIA programs (Carroll and McKendree were the others) to earn NAIA Scholar Team recognition, posting a combined 3.04 GPA in 2009-10. The highest team GPAs within the Cougar Athletics program came from the men’s and women’s tennis teams, with the men posting a 3.47 team GPA and the women notching a 3.45 team GPA.
Out of the top 10 schools in the 2009-10 Directors’ Cup standings, Azusa Pacific had the most NAIA Scholar Teams. There were 8 teams in the top 20 of the Directors’ Cup standings with at least 10 NAIA Scholar Teams, and 4 of those were Golden State Athletic Conference programs: Azusa Pacific (1st in Directors’ Cup, 12 NAIA Scholar Teams), Biola (12th in Directors’ Cup, 16 NAIA Scholar Teams), Point Loma Nazarene (16th in Directors’ Cup, 10 NAIA Scholar Teams), and Vanguard (18th in Directors’ Cup, 11 NAIA Scholar Teams).
