AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific is hosting both the men’s and women’s semifinal games of the 2004 NAIA Region II Soccer Tournament this Saturday.
The women, who are the tournament’s No. 1 seed, host Concordia at 10:30 a.m. in Cougar Stadium, while the men, also the No. 1 seed, host GSAC co-champion Vanguard at 1 p.m. on the Azusa Square Field. Both games are a part of Azusa Pacific’s homecoming festivities.
Both teams earned a first-round bye.
The Cougar women host fifth-seed Concordia, which beat Westmont on penalty kicks (4-3) on Wednesday in Santa Barbara. The Eagles are 8-7-2 this season and are 2-2-1 in their past 5 games. The Cougars, 13-1-1 and ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, already beat the Eagles, 1-0, in both teams’ GSAC opener earlier this season.
Should the Cougars win they would host the NAIA Region II Championship game Tuesday (Nov. 9) against either Biola or Notre Dame de Namur.
Admission will be charged for the women’s game. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for Azusa Pacific faculty/staff, $4 for students with a valid ID and children under 10 are free.
Meanwhile, the Cougar men host No. 11-ranked Vanguard, the same team with which they shared the GSAC title. It was the Cougars’ fifth GSAC title and first since 2001 and Vanguard’s first-ever GSAC crown in men’s soccer. The fourth-seed Lions knocked off No. 16-ranked Fresno Pacific, 1-0, Wednesday in Costa Mesa. The Cougars, 15-1-1 and ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, suffered their first defeat of the season last Saturday.
Just 3 weeks ago, the Cougars defeated the Lions, 3-2, on Azusa Square after erasing a 2-goal deficit.
Should the Cougars win they would host either Holy Names or Notre Dame de Namur next Saturday (Nov. 12) at 1 p.m.
Admission will not be charged for the men’s game.
