GLENDORA, Calif. -- Junior Art Fatkhiev and freshmen Matthijs Bolsius and Danny Colten each won their singles match and anchored each of Azusa Pacific’s doubles wins, leading an 8-1 near-sweep over NCAA Div. III Occidental Friday afternoon in the Cougars’ home opener at Citrus College.
Fatkhiev swept Daniel Ikuta at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with fellow junior John Goodrich in an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win.
Bolsius played at No. 1 singles for the first time in his career, and his debut in the top spot was a rousing success, as he picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vince Mathias. Bolsius and freshman Robby Dabbs were victorious at No. 1 doubles with another 8-4 win, and Colten and freshman Jan Friedrich rounded out the doubles sweep with a third 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Colten and Friedrich each won in straight sets in singles play, while Dabbs came back from a 1-set deficit for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 2-0 on the season, while Occidental drops to 0-1 in 4-year intercollegiate competition this season. The Cougars return to the court in less than 24 hours, taking on NCAA Div. II UC San Diego in a dual match slated to start at 1 p.m. in San Diego. The men’s match follows the Cougar women’s season opener against UC San Diego, which begins at 10 a.m..
