GLENDORA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific bounced back from its first defeat of the season to shut out Chapman, 9-0, in a dual match Thursday afternoon at Citrus College. A group of 4 freshmen led the sweep, the Cougars’ first out of conference or NAIA Tournament play since a 9-0 win over Alliant International on April 16, 2005.
Freshman Ronald Chow enjoyed a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles, his first match in that slot after going 1-1 at No. 5 singles previously this season. The Cougars’ No. 2 through 5 singles players each enjoyed straight-sets wins, as well, with freshman Danny Colten coming back from a set down and giving up just 1 game over the final 2 sets for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tyler Martin at No. 6 singles.
Chow teamed with fellow freshman Robby Dabbs for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Azusa Pacific also swept the doubles matches.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 3-1 on the season, while Chapman drops to 0-2. The Cougars return to the court Saturday, when they take on their third NCAA Div. III opponent of the season, Redlands, in a dual match slated to start at 2 p.m. at Citrus College.
