GLENDORA, Calif. -- It had been 21 months between non-conference sweeps for Azusa Pacific men’s tennis before Thursday’s 9-0 win over Chapman, but the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Cougars needed just 48 hours to post another after shutting out NCAA Div. III No. 9-ranked Redlands, 9-0, in a dual match Saturday afternoon at Citrus College.
At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Ronald Chow and Robby Dabbs posted an 8-0 win over Redlands’ Chris Trippel and Ian Bradburn, and both won their individual singles matches, as well. Chow defeated Trippel in straight sets, while Dabbs went down to the wire for a 3-set 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 win over Bradburn.
The Cougars’ top 3 singles players each won in straight sets, with senior David Goodman collecting a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, freshman Mathias Weber scoring a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and sophomore Patrick Kur picking up a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.
Goodman teamed with freshman Matthijs Bolsius for an exciting 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles, helping the Cougars sweep the doubles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 4-1 on the season, while Redlands drops to 2-2. The Cougars return to the court for a home match against their fourth NCAA Div. III opponent of the season, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, in a dual match slated to start Friday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at Citrus College.
