GLENDORA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific added its fourth shutout in the past 6 matches to an impressive early-season run, following up an impressive 5-4 road win against No. 6-ranked Fresno Pacific with a 9-0 home sweep over Westmont Saturday afternoon.
Patrick Kur and Matthijs Bolsius led the way, dropping only 1 game in 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Kur teamed with Mathias Weber for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, and Bolsius and Art Fatkhiev joined forces in doubles play for the first time this season, posting an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
Weber earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, and Chow and Fatkhiev each improved to 7-1 in singles play with straight-sets wins. In his first taste of collegiate action, freshman John Phillips was an 8-5 winner with Chow at No. 3 doubles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 8-1 on the season and is off to a 3-0 start to the 8-match conference campaign as the Cougars pursue an unprecedented sixth consecutive GSAC title. Westmont drops to 2-3 overall, 0-3 in GSAC play. The Cougars host Hope International on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cougars’ home courts at nearby Citrus College in Glendora.
