GLENDORA, Calif. -- For the eighth time in 13 matches, the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific won at least 8 of the 9 possible points, posting an 8-1 non-conference victory over No. 25-ranked California Baptist Saturday afternoon at Citrus College. It is the Cougars’ second win over the Lancers in the past 3 weeks, with the last a 9-0 shutout in Riverside Feb. 17.
A pair of 9-8 wins from its top 2 doubles pairs helped Azusa Pacific sweep the doubles, and Art Fatkhiev and Robby Dabbs earned the 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep and earn all 3 points before singles play began.
The Cougars continued their success into singles play, as Fatkhiev, Dabbs, Matthijs Bolsius and Jan Friedrich each won in straight sets, while Mathias Weber earned a 6-0 win in the first set before his singles opponent retired from the second set.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 12-1 on the season, while California Baptist drops to 3-9 overall. The Cougars host a pair of non-conference opponents, Baker (Kan.) and defending NCAA Div. III national champion Emory (Ga.) on Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 and 15, before returning to GSAC play when they visit No. 11-ranked Point Loma Nazarene next Saturday, March 17.
