GLENDORA, Calif. -- For nearly 2 months, the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific has scarcely been challenged while racking up 16 straight wins, defeating opponents by a combined score of 124-20 in a stretch that included 9 wins over teams currently ranked in their respective division’s top 25. For the first time since a narrow 5-4 road win over No. 6-ranked Fresno Pacific, the Cougars needed each of its points to win a match, scoring a 5-4 victory over NCAA Div. III’s No. 3-ranked Middlebury (Vt.) Monday afternoon at Citrus College.

After splitting the first 2 doubles matches, freshmen Robby Dabbs and Ronald Chow earned a valuable point with a hard-fought 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

Senior David Goodman was victorious in the top singles slot, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alex Scott, and Patrick Kur and Matthijs Bolsius each earned straight-sets wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to seal the win despite Middlebury wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 19-1 overall. The Cougars extended a pair of streaks with the win, posting their 17th consecutive victory overall this season and their 20th straight home win to extend a streak that spans over a full year to March 2006. Middlebury drops to 4-1 overall. The Cougars are back in action Tuesday afternoon, hosting Colby (Maine), currently ranked No. 27 in NCAA Div. III, in a 2:30 p.m. match at Citrus College in Glendora.
