Busy Cougars Win Again

GLENDORA, Calif. -- Playing its fifth match in the past 7 days, the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific extended its winning streak to 18 matches after shutting out NCAA Div. III’s No. 27-ranked Colby (Maine), 9-0, Tuesday afternoon at Citrus College.

It was the Cougars’ eighth shutout of the season, surpassing last year’s final total of 7 when Azusa Pacific was the NAIA’s runner-up.

Ronald Chow’s 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles highlighted the Cougar victory, and Matthijs Bolsius posted a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 20-1 overall and extended its home winning streak to 21 matches, a streak that spans over a full year to March 2006. Colby drops to 3-1 on the season. The Cougars return to action for Saturday’s GSAC finale, as they attempt to clinch an unprecedented sixth straight conference title when they host No. 6-ranked Vanguard at 1 p.m. at Citrus College.

John Goodrich posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles and teamed with John Phillips for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
