SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific scored a doubles sweep to take a 3-0 lead over No. 9-ranked Point Loma Nazarene in the opening semifinal of the NAIA Region II Men’s Tennis Tournament Thursday morning in San Diego, and Patrick Kur and Mathias Weber won singles matches in quick fashion for the 5-0 victory that sent the Cougars into tomorrow’s regional championship with No. 5-ranked Fresno Pacific.

Azusa Pacific’s No. 2 doubles tandem David Goodman and Matthijs Bolsius twice broke serve to come back from a 7-4 deficit to post a 9-7 win over Point Loma Nazarene’s Curt Wheeler and Philipp Wulf, highlighting the Cougars’ doubles sweep. It was Goodman and Bolsius’ second doubles win over Wheeler and Wulff in the past week, as the pairs met up in the doubles semifinals of last weekend’s Ojai Tournament, where the Cougar tandem posted an 8-5 win over its GSAC foe before winning the Ojai doubles title with a win over Kur and Weber in the final.

Kur and Weber teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and the Cougars’ all-freshman tandem of Ronald Chow and Robby Dabbs completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Weber’s quick 6-1, 6-3 win over Wulf at No. 3 singles set up Kur’s match-clinching 6-3, 6-1 win over Jonathan Bowman at No. 2 singles. Under NAIA postseason rules, matches are halted as soon as a team has clinched the match win.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 23-3 on the season and advances to Friday’s 9 a.m. NAIA Region II Championship held at Point Loma Nazarene, where they will face Fresno Pacific in a rematch of a closely-contested early-season matchup of GSAC powerhouses. The Cougars won the Feb. 19 matchup in Fresno, 5-4, keeping alive a conference win streak that reached 52 matches by the end of the year. The winner of tomorrow’s regional final will receive the region’s automatic bid to the 56th Annual NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship tournament, held May 14-18 in Mobile, Ala.
