Good Men: Cougar Honors Announced

Tue., May 22, 2007

AZUSA, Calif. -- Just over 4 years ago, Azusa Pacific men’s tennis program thought it had arrived after appearing in the NAIA title match after winning back-to-back Golden State Athletic Conference championships. Then David Goodman came along.

In Goodman’s 4-year career, he led the Cougars to a perfect 36-0 conference record, 4 more national championship match appearances and the first men’s tennis NAIA title in program history as a 2005 sophomore. After leading the Cougars to their fifth straight title match, Goodman earned his fourth consecutive NAIA All-American honor, collecting first team recognition for the second time in his career. Goodman was also named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.

Goodman played exclusively at No. 1 singles, where he went 13-8 for the Cougars in 2007, and he posted a 21-6 doubles record.

Cougar head coach Mark Bohren was named GSAC and NAIA Region II Coach of the Year for the eighth straight season, giving him 9 total conference and regional coach of the year honors. Bohren’s squad was a perfect 8-0 in GSAC play, extending the Cougars’ conference winning streak to 52 matches.

Joining Goodman on the NAIA All-American first team was sophomore Patrick Kur, now a 2-time first team selection after earning the same honor as a 2006 freshman. Kur was 14-5 in singles play and 13-9 in doubles action.

Matthijs Bolsius and Mathias Weber, 2 of the Cougars’ 8 freshmen on the 12-man roster, earned NAIA All-American second team recognition after successful rookie campaigns.

Bolsius posted a 22-5 record in singles, playing primarily in the No. 4 spot and winning 4 straight postseason singles matches before suffering a narrow defeat in the title match. He was 23-5 in doubles play, winning 20 of 24 matches when teamed up with Goodman. Weber went 13-10 in singles play and 17-9 in doubles.

Freshman Jan Friedrich joined Goodman as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete to round out the Cougars’ postseason honors. Friedrich was unbeaten in 11 matches this season, winning 7 of 7 singles matches and all 4 in doubles play.

Azusa Pacific finished 27-4 overall on the season.

David Goodman's recent selection to the NAIA All-American first team is his fouth straight All-American honor.
