GLENDORA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific posted a season-opening 9-0 win over La Verne Thursday afternoon at Citrus College, taking all 6 singles matches in straight sets after sweeping doubles.

Sophomore Ronald Chow and senior Art Fatkhiev each surrendered just a single game in their individual singles matchups, with Chow posting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexandru Muresan at No. 1 and Fatkhiev earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory over J.P. Arreglado at the No. 2 spot.

Freshman Daniel Moore collected his first collegiate victory, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while sophomores Jan Friedrich, Danny Colten and John Phillips each remained unbeaten with straight-sets victories in the fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches. As 2007 freshmen, Friedrich was 7-0, Colten went 5-0 and Phillips was 2-0 for the Cougar squad that was the NAIA’s runner-up.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 1-0 on the season, while La Verne drops to 1-1. The Cougars’ busy weekend continues with home matches Friday against Occidental before a Saturday morning clash with NCAA Division II’s No. 6-ranked UC San Diego. Both matches will be held at the Citrus College tennis courts.
