AZUSA, Calif. -- Three different players made their season debut Monday afternoon, and the trio led the NAIA’s No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific to a near-perfect 9-0 victory over Hope International in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis match at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Whitman Hough led the way, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles before teaming up with sophomore Ilja Ikonnikov at the top of the doubles lineup for 1 of the Cougars’ 3 8-0 doubles wins. Junior Jonathan Sosnowski logged his first win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, his first live match action this year.

Freshman John Wilson made his collegiate debut with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, then teamed up with Sosnowski for the duo’s first doubles match of the year. The pair posted an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the perfect doubles sweep.

Senior Danny Colten and freshman Jochem Hoefnagels posted the Cougars’ other 8-0 doubles win, doing so at the No. 2 position, and both Colten and Hoefnagels were straight-set winners in the top 2 spots in the singles lineup.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-2 overall, 4-1 in GSAC play, while Hope International drops to 0-9 overall and 0-6 GSAC. The Cougars continue the first round of the conference schedule with Friday’s 2 p.m. visit to the NAIA’s No. 3-ranked Concordia.
