COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific picked up its first back-to-back wins of the season, both against teams in the NAIA’s top 10, posting a 7-2 win Wednesday over No. 5-ranked Concordia at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Cougars swept doubles and won each of the top 4 singles matches to take a 7-0 lead in the match before Concordia picked up its points with wins at the final 2 singles positions.
The Cougars’ top doubles team, junior Janosch Apelt and sophomore Jochem Hoefnagels ran their unbeaten doubles record to 5-0 with an 8-5 win at No. 1, highlighting Azusa Pacific’s doubles sweep.
With a 3-0 lead in hand entering singles play, Apelt rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Concordia’s Andrey Potapkin, and freshman Benedikt Eger notched a 6-1, 6-4 win against Bruno Santarelli at No. 3 to quickly clinch the match victory for the Cougars.
Hoefnagels also posted a straight-sets win, tallying a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Kareem Berdai at No. 2, and junior Whitman Houghpicked up a 3-set No. 4 singles victory to give Azusa Pacific a 7-0 lead.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in GSAC play, while Concordia falls to 2-3 overall, 2-2 GSAC. Up next for the Cougars is a stretch of 8 matches in 11 days, with the first 7 all at home in a 9-day stretch that starts with a Tuesday, March 8 matchup against a third straight NAIA Top-10 foe in No. 8 Westmont.
