LA MIRADA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific collected its fourth straight victory with a 9-0 win over Biola Friday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.
After sweeping doubles by a combined 24-7 margin, the Cougars were even stronger in singles, winning 4 of the 6 matches without losing a single game and claiming the other 2 victories in straight sets. The combined singles margin was 72-9.
Junior Janosch Apelt registered the first 6-0, 6-0 win of the afternoon, knocking off David Mossman at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Jochem Hoefnagels posted an identical score for his No. 2 singles win. Those 2 also combined for an 8-4 win at the top doubles position to key Azusa Pacific’s doubles sweep.
Also posting 6-0, 6-0 singles wins were freshman Frederik Wilkens at No. 5 along with sophomore Alex Dickson at the No. 6 position. Juniors Whitman Hough and Ilja Ikonnikov, who together claimed an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, also won both of their matches in the middle of the Cougars’ singles lineup to help complete the shutout victory.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 15-4 overall, 10-2 GSAC, while Biola suffers its season-high fifth consecutive defeat to fall to 4-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The Cougars have just 2 matches remaining in the regular season, visiting Westmont on Tuesday, April 12, before the April 27 home finale against Point Loma Nazarene.
