FULLERTON, Calif.-- The NAIA’s No. 4 ranked Azusa Pacific improved to 2-0 on the season in a 9-0 GSAC opening win over Hope International on Saturday morning. The Cougars swept singles play without allowing a Royal to win more than three games in a single set, while Azusa Pacific won doubles by a combined 19 games.

In No. 1 singles Janosch Apelt defeated Tulio Amaral 6-3, 6-1, while Jochem Hoefnagels recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ivan Rashkov. Frederik Wilkens went unbeaten in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over John-Douglas Ownes in No. 3 singles, and Ben Eger registered a 6-0, 6-2 win against Thiago Brito.

Gary Yam won 6-1, 6-0 over Tyler McDonald as Ilja Ikonnikov swept Joshua Feichter 6-0, 6-0 to wrap up singles.

In doubles the pair of Apelt and Hoefnagels defeated Owens and Amaral 8-1 and the duo of Yam and Ikkonikov won 8-3. Zach McMahon, who posted a doubles win against Pomona Pitzer, teamed up with Ricky Sanchez to take an 8-1 win against Feichter and McDonald.

The Cougars play a busy schedule next week, starting with Concordia on Monday, followed by matches against Fresno Pacific, Grand Canyon, and Vanguard.
