FRESNO, Calif.-- Playing in its second match in as many days the NAIA’s No. 4 ranked Azusa Pacific suffered its first loss of the year against No. 1 Fresno Pacific, falling 7-2 to the Sunbirds.
The Cougars (3-1, 2-1) got their lone singles win when Jochem Hoefnagels registered a tight three-set victory (4-6, 7-5, 9-7) against Kirill Sinitsyn in the No. 2 position. In No. 1 singles Janosch Apelt lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Xavier Smith while Frederik Wilkens fell 7-5, 6-0 to Cledson Carvalho in the 3rd position.
Ben Eger lost 6-4, 6-2 to Nathan Martinet and Ilja Ikonnikov was defeated by Amarit Sanchez 6-4, 6-3, while Lloyd Bruce-Burgess posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gary Yam.
In doubles play Apelt and Hoefnagels took an 8-6 win over Smith and Carvalho in the No. 1 spot, but the Sunbirds responded with a 9-7 win against Eger and Wilkens before finishing Azusa Pacific’s Yam and Ikonnikov 8-2.
On Friday Azusa Pacific looks to bounce back when they host Grand Canyon (Ariz.) at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to Vanguard on Saturday.
