COSTA MESA, Calif.-- The NAIA’s 4th ranked Azusa Pacific overcame a slow start to defeat No. 8 Vanguard 7-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars, who improved to 6-1, 3-1 in GSAC, opened the match with a pair of doubles losses, but came back to sweep singles for the win.
In the No. 1 spot Janosch Apelt and Jochem Hoefnagels provided the Cougars’ only doubles win, defeating Vanguard’s No. 1 team 8-5. Ben Eger and Frederik Wilkens suffered an 8-4 defeat in No. doubles, while Gary Yam and Ilja Ikonnikov fell 8-6 in the third position.
The Cougars, however responded in singles play as the Cougars didn’t drop a set in all six matches. Apelt posted a 6-0, 6-4 win against Vanguard’s No. 1, while Hoefnagels battled out a two-set win (6-4, 7-6 (8)) in the No. 2 spot. Wilkens won 6-2, 6-2, Ikonnikov rolled in a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and Yam registered a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Cougars will enjoy a nice break before traveling to play Westmont on March 5 at 2:30 p.m.
