AZUSA, Calif.-- Life right now is good for the NAIA’s 5th ranked Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team. Fresh off a 3-0 week which ended with back-to-back 9-0 sweeps the Cougars notched their third straight 9-0 verdict, defeating Hope International (0-10, 0-8) at home on Monday afternoon to improve to 12-1 (6-1 GSAC).
In singles Jochem Hoefnagels kept his perfect season alive, defeating Ivan Rashkov 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 in the closest match of the day. With the win Hoefnagels improved to 13-0 overall while the Cougars record in the 2nd position moved to 13-0.
At No. 1 Janosch Apelt defeated Tulio Amaral 6-0, 6-2, and Frederik Wikens registered a 6-2, 6-1 win against John-Douglas Owens in the 3rd position.
Ben Eger, who has braved through illness and injury, recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Thiago Brito at No. 4 to improve to 9-4 in singles.
Ilja Ikonnikov cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Tyler McDonald in the 5th position, while Zach McMahon tallied his first singles win, beating Joshua Feichter 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles Eger and Ikonnikov continued their hot stretch together, posting an 8-3 defeat against Brito and Rashkov at No. 2. The duo is now 5-0 after opening the season a combined 5-10 with other partners.
At No. 1 Hoefnagels and Apelt picked up their 10th win of the year with an 8-2 showing against Amaral and Owens, while Daniel Sosnowski played in his first match of the year, teaming with Wilkens to post an 8-2 win over Feichter and McDonald at No. 3.
The Cougars get back on the courts on Thursday when they travel to San Diego for a match with Point Loma Nazarene at 2 p.m.
