AZUSA, Calif.-- Playing against a talented Concordia team the NAIA’s 4th ranked Azusa Pacific fed off a doubles sweep to post a 7-2 win over the 8th ranked Eagles on Monday afternoon. Janosh Apelt highlighted Azusa Pacific’s victory, defeating Bruno Santarelli in three sets while Jochem Hoefnagels continued to roll.

At No. 1 singles Apelt, who has never lost to Santarelli in his four years at Azusa Pacific, dug an early hole after dropping the first set 2-6. But the senior fought back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 to register his sixth straight win. At No. 2 Hoefnagels barely broke a sweat, sweeping Ashkon Babaee 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 17-0 this year.

Ben Eger recorded an impressive win at No. 4, beating Gernot Hagemann 6-3, 6-4 for his ninth consecutive victory before Ilja Ikonnikov registered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Ryan McNamara at No. 5. Concordia posted two singles wins as Frederik Wilkens retired with a foot injury after trailing in the second set against Rafael Coutinho, while Gary Yam fell to Jan Guler 6-2, 6-1 in the 6th position.

In doubles Eger and Ikonnikov sprinted to an 8-1 win over McNamara and Patrick Szeremeta before Apelt and Hoefnagels notched their 10th straight doubles win with an 8-5 showing. Yam and Wilkens closed out doubles play with an 8-4 victory.

Azusa Pacific (16-1, 9-1) will enjoy a break before playing host to No. 1 Fresno Pacific next Thursday.
