AZUSA, Calif.-- Jochem Hoefnagels registered a 6-3, 6-0 win to improve to 21-0 this year as the NAIA’s 4th ranked Azusa Pacific defeated Biola 9-0 on Friday afternoon. The Cougars didn’t drop a set in the win and won all but two sets by three or more games in their dominating performance against the Eagles.
Hoefnagels, who was playing at No. 1 in place of Janosch Apelt, had no issues performing at the top spot, beating Weston Leopold in straight sets. The junior, who was named NAIA Player of the Week earlier this month, is a combined 38-2 this season between doubles and singles, and has won 24 straight dating back to last year, moving his career record to 52-9.
Ilja Ikonnikov posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Thomas Coibion at No. 4, while Ben Eger recorded 6-4, 6-3 victory against Brent Worthington at No. 3. Eger is now 9-1in his last 10 matches. Frederik Wilkens played in his first match at No. 2 this year, and came away with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
On court five Gary Yam beat Isaiah Pekary 6-2, 6-1, while Daniel Sonsowski recorded a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) defeat of Anthony Sena at No. 6.
In doubles Hoefnagels and Apelt continued to impress, tabbing an 8-3 win over Worthington and Leopold at No. 1. On court two Yam and Wilkens took care of Coibion and Mossman with a score of 8-6, while Eger and Ikonnikov ran through Pekary and Sena at No. 3.
The Cougars now have just one match left before traveling to Mobile, Ala. for the NAIA Championships. Azusa pacific takes on Point Loma Nazarene on Wednesday at home.
