AZUSA, Calif.-- After Friday’s painstaking loss to No. 9 Fresno Pacific, the No. 10 ranked Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team got back on track with an 8-1 win over Hawai’i Hilo Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took two of three in doubles, and got four quick wins atop the singles lineup to record its 13th win of the season.
No. 7 ranked Frederik Wilkens won his 14th consecutive match Saturday, defeating Kainoa Rosa 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, keeping the senior’s mark in the second spot perfect on the season. No. 5 ranked Jan Meyer registered his 12th win of the year after beating Tom Greer-Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1. Pascal Engel kept up the Cougars’ winning ways with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Kallen Mizuguchi at No. 3, before Alan Leahy registered a 6-1, 7-6 win over Spencer Travalino at No. 4.
Tomas Aranguiz took down Daniel Tada 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, and Sasha Kingsley beat Nicolas Franco 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 to close out the day.
In Doubles action the team of Jan Meyer and Gary Yam improved to 3-0 with an 8-3 win against Greer-Smith and Rosa at No. 1, while Wilkens and Aranguiz recorded an 8-2 defeat of Tada and Mizuguchi at No. 2. Joseph Remington and Randall Hsieh played in their first doubles match as a team, but fell 8-3 to Travalino and Makoa Rosa in their debut.
Azusa Pacific will return to action on Friday when they host Point Loma at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Center.
