AZUSA, Calif.-- The Azusa Pacific men's tennis team earned its second sweep in two days, defeating NCAA Division I UC Riverside 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. With the win, the Cougars have won 26 of the last 27 individual singles and doubles matches.
The freshman pairing of Alan Leahy and Pascal Engel got the first win of the day with an 8-1 defeat of Luis Gastao and Sean Robles. Jan Meyer and Gary Yam followed that with an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Cooper Bridge and Michael Carella. At No. 2, Frederik Wilkens and Tomas Aranguiz completed the doubles sweep, beating Jack Felich and Marcus Vizcarra 8-4.
Meyer quickly added the fourth win, benefitting from a retirement 6-0, 3-0 to boost his winning streak to five matches. Then, Aranguiz clinched the win for the Cougars 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Leahy defeated Sean Yun 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and Engel beat Felich 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. Yam added the Cougars' eight win of the day, beating Carella 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5.
Wilkens was the only Cougar that was pushed to a third set. After having his serve broken by Bridge at 5-6 in the first set, Wilkens bounced back to win the second set and match tiebreaker for a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 win, his 17th consecutive to keep the senior’s record at No. 2 perfect on the season.
Azusa Pacific will host Biola on Wednesday before wrapping up the regular season at home against UC San Diego.
