AZUSA, Calif.-- In its final tune up before competing in the Pacific West Conference tournament next week the No. 10 ranked Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team recorded a 7-2 win over No. 11 UC San Diego Friday. The Cougars won the day’s first two matches, before the Tritons broke Alan Leahy at No. 3 doubles to make it a 2-1 affair after doubles play.
In singles action Azusa Pacific won five of six matches, with No. 5 Jan Meyer recording a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Max Jiganti at No. 1. Seventh ranked Frederik Wilkens edged out Rajeev Herekar in the first set of a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 in the final home match of his career.
Pascal Engel registered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory against Ganesh Alagappan at No. 3, while Leahy tabbed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Kona Luu on court four. Tomas Aranguiz posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Mark Meyer at No. 6, and Gary Yam fell to Horea Porutiu 4-6, 4-6 at No. 5.
Yam and Meyer cruised in an 8-3 win over Jiganti and Luu at No. 1 doubles before Wilkens and Aranguiz raced past Minami and Porutui at No. 2. At No. 3 Leahy and Engel fought off a pair of match points in the clinching game, but after fighting back from a 40-15 hole to force deuce, dropped the next two points go give the Tritons their first match of the afternoon.
Azusa Pacific closes the regular season with a 17-5 mark and will likely enter next week’s PacWest tournament as the league’s No. 3 seed.
