AZUSA, Calif.-- The accolades keep on coming in for Azusa Pacific’s two-time NCCAA national championship men’s tennis team, with Jan Meyer and Frederik Wilkens being named ITA Division II All-Americans. Meyer and Wilkens, who each closed out the regular season ranked in the nation’s top-15 (No. 5 and No. 13 respectively), are the second and third Cougars in program history to earn Division II All-American recognition, following in the footsteps of 2013 honoree Jochem Hoefnagels.
Meyer and Wilkens anchored a Cougar lineup that posted its third consecutive 20-win season, combining for a 42-6 record in the top-two singles positions. The duo also helped Azusa Pacific to its first PacWest championship match and third national title in program history (2005; NAIA).
“What a tremendous honor for each of the guys. They worked so hard all season and are truly deserving. Freddy had a great career and it’s great to see him close out his four years like this. I couldn’t be happier for him. Jan has put together two impressive seasons, and we look forward to what he can do for us over the next two years. He’s one of the most talented players we’ve had in this program and he’s only getting better,” said head coach Mark Bohren.
After dropping the first two matches of the season, Wilkens rattled off 20 consecutive victories at No. 2 singles. He closed out the year with a 20-3 record, which included a 4-1 mark against ranked opponents. The senior finishes his career with a 68-26 record.
Meyer, who claimed the ITA West singles championship in the fall, registered his second straight season with 20+ victories. The sophomore posted a 22-3 season, pushing his career singles record to 45-4, with six wins coming against opponents rated in the ITA national rankings. Meyer also helped the Cougars to their second straight NCCAA title, posting a 4-0 record at the national tournament.
