AZUSA, Calif. – Three Azusa Pacific men’s tennis players were named to the 2002 NAIA All-American teams.
Senior Benny Lin, perhaps the top singles’ player in the NAIA, was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Remarkably, in 2 seasons at Azusa Pacific, Lin lost just one singles’ match posting a mark of 49-1. That also includes 2 consecutive Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament championships.
In his first season as a collegiate tennis player, freshman Sam Fletcher was named to the first team. This season, Fletcher posted a 33-5 mark, filling in rather admirably at No. 1 while Lin was out with an injury midway through the season. Fletcher was also a perfect 8-0 in GSAC play.
Also, the Cougars’ No. 3-player Simon Bieri (25-6), who also filled in at No. 2, was named to the second team for the second straight year. Bieri also combined with Fletcher to post a 32-8 mark as the Cougars’ top doubles’ team this year.
The Cougars are coming off one of their finest seasons in program history, which includes another run into the NAIA Quarterfinals, a third GSAC championship in the last 5 seasons, as well as another team championship at the prestigious Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.
Additionally, Lin, Eva Dvorakova, Laurel Buehler and Patty Guinto were all named 2002 NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes, and the Cougar women’s team received a Scholar Team award.
