LA JOLLA, Calif. -- In its first match in more than 2 weeks, the NAIA’s No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific cruised to an 8-1 win at NCAA Division II UC San Diego Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 1-1 on the season. It was UC San Diego’s season-opener.
The Cougars swept all 3 doubles’ matches, needing just 2 wins in singles’ play to clinch the match. They did better, winning 5 of 6 singles matches with the Tritons getting their lone point at No. 6.
Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson got things rolling with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The other doubles’ matches were closer as the Cougars won both by identical 8-6 scores. Fletcher then cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bryan Swatt at No. 1 singles, and Davidson rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Seth Spector at No. 4. David Goodman (No. 3) and Gordon Hong (No. 5) also picked up straight set wins.
Azusa Pacific begins its quest for a fourth straight GSAC title Tuesday when it travels to Fullerton to face Hope International at 2 p.m.
