AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific took 2 of 3 doubles’ matches, then swept all 6 singles’ matches to take an 8-1 win over NCAA Division II No. 20-ranked Presbyterian (S.C.) Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-1 overall. Presbyterian, from Clinton, S.C., falls to 5-4.

In a hotly contested match for most of the day, the Cougars got tested for the first time since dropping their season opener to NCAA Division I UCLA. In a bit of an upset, Paul Ratchford and Kshitij Dwivedi staved off 2 match points to defeat Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-5). That would be the only point the Blue Hose earned.

Fletcher bounced back to knock off Ratchford, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, and Davidson also swept Al Morgan, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4. Presbyterian nearly took 2 more points, but Boris Bakalov was able to hold off Hector Rincon at No. 2, winning in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6 (10-5), and David Goodman downed Dwivedi at No. 3, 6-4, 7-5.
