Azusa Pacific 2
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, stole the doubles’ point, but NCAA Division I BYU bounced back to nearly sweep the singles’ matches and get a 5-2 win over the Cougars Thursday in Palm Springs, Calif.
The loss snaps the Cougars 12-game winning streak and drops them to 12-2 overall. Their only other loss was to NCAA Division I UCLA. BYU improves to 8-3.
Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson downed Jose Luis Lechuga and Nima Roshan, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, and Gordon Hong and David Goodman knocked off Shane LaPorte and Jonathan Sanchez, 9-8, at No. 3 to steal the doubles’ point.
Fletcher then defeated Roshan at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, but that was all the Cougars could muster. Goodman nearly picked up another point at No. 2, but fell to James Ludlow, 7-6, 4-6 (10-7). Hong also forced a third set before retiring.
“BYU is a very good team,” said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. “With a few more breaks, we might have been able to sneak this one out, but it was a good test and experience for us. Tomorrow’s match with Santa Fe (N.M.) will be just as tough, especially without Boris (Bakalov) for the third straight match.”
