NAIA Tournament – Second Round
MOBILE, Ala. -- The NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific began its quest for its first-ever tennis national championship with an easy 5-0 win over unseeded Olivet Nazarene Tuesday in the second round of the 2005 NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala.
The Cougars, who have advanced to each of the past 2 championship matches, advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals to face seventh-seed Virginia Intermont at 7 a.m. (PDT).
The win is the Cougars’ 12th in a row and moves them to 24-3 overall. Olivet Nazarene, which defeated Webber International (Fla.) in yesterday’s opening round, sees its season come to a close at 21-3.
Right from the start the Cougars jumped all over the Tigers, sweeping all 3 doubles matches. Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson’s 8-3 win at No. 1 over Mark Hervey and Fermin Amezqueta was the closest of the 3 doubles’ matches.
The quick lead put the Cougars in position to win just 2 of the 6 singles’ matches. Fletcher upended Hervey, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1, and Tom Jelsma, playing in the No. 4 slot for the first time this season downed Arka Mondal, 6-2, 6-2, to bring an end to the match.
Fellow GSAC-member Vanguard, the fifth-seed, also won its match to move into the quarters as 7 of the 8 top seeds all advanced. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) is the only unseeded team in the field as the Blue Raiders upset No. 8 seed Northwood (Fla.), 5-2, for the right to play top seed Santa Fe (N.M.).
