Cougars Drop Broncos

Fri., Feb. 17, 2006

POMONA, Calif. -- The line-up may have looked different but the results were the same as the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA, Azusa Pacific, cruised to a 7-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the opening round of the Cal Poly Tournament.

The Cougars (5-0) advance to the second round of team play where they will take on a challenging foe in Abilene Christian, a top flight NCAA Division II opponent. The team got 4 wins from players seeing their first singles action of the season including a win by Justin Green at No. 3 singles over Tyrone Wang, 7-6, 5-7, (10-6).

Alex Muresan and Jon Wagner were straight set winners at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as each dominated the Bronco foes.

“We used everyone today and it was good to see us play good tennis and get the win,” said head coach Mark Bohren. “Abilene Christian should be a good test for us today and we’ll see how we measure up.”

The Cougars featured their usual line-up in doubles play and dropped only 8 games in the 3 matches as they built a sizeable lead that the Broncos could not overcome.
