POMONA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific may not have looked as dominant as it would have liked but in the end the result was still a win.
The NAIA’s top-ranked Cougars defeated a stubborn Abilene Christian team, 6-3, to run their record to a perfect 5-0. Boris Bakalov and Tom Jelsma defeated Casper Steemkamp and George Carstens, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles and, combined with Cole Billings and Art Fatkiev winning 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, gave the Cougars an early upped hand in the match.
Bakalov remained undefeated in singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 romp over Steemkamp in singles. Patrick Kur and Fatkiev were also straight set winners.
“It was good for the men to the tournament against a strong NCAA Division II program,” said head coach Mark Bohren. “We did not play our best tennis today but still found a way to win.”
