Azusa, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific, the top-ranked team in the NAIA, swept all 3 doubles matches en route to a 5-0 victory over No. 16 Point Loma Nazarene to advance to the men’s Region II championship match.
The Cougars swept the 3 doubles matches from the Sea Lions carrying them to a big lead entering singles play. Needing only to capture 2 more points, Azusa Pacific got them at 4 and 5 singles with straight set wins by Art Fatkiev and Justin Green. The win moves the Cougars into the final against Fresno Pacific.
Azusa Pacific looked very strong in doubles particularly at No. 3 where Boris Bakalov and Jon Wagner teamed to beat Jon Eklo and Jeff Nelson by an 8-1 score. David Goodman and Cole Billings were able to hold off a charge by Craig Johnson and Mark Philibosian, 8-4 at No. 2. Fatkiev teamed with Patrick Kur to knock off Jonathan Bowman and Stephen Sheldon, 8-5, at No. 1.
With the win the tournaments No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific improves to 22-1 on the season. The No. 4 seed Point Loma Nazarene falls to 11-13.
