AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific has never not been the Region II champion and after the doubles portion of today’s competition that distinction seemed awfully precarious.
Fresno Pacific took an early lead winning 2 of the 3 doubles points putting Azusa Pacific in a hole. However, behind some inspired efforts from the Cougars, singles turned the tide and Azusa Pacific retained its regional title by virtue of a 5-3 win over the Sunbirds.
David Goodman and Cole Billings gave the Cougars a win they had to have at No. 3 doubles beating Greg Jackson and Roberto Bianco, 8-6.
Tom Jelsma was the first singles player off the court with a win beating Bianco at No. 4 in straight sets. Jelsma’s win tied the match at 2 apiece.
From there it was all about the top 3 singles players who were each put on splendid performances. Boris Bakalov was impressive in his No. 1 singles win and Patrick Kur and Goodman looked equally as good.
The regional championship is the seventh consecutive for Azusa Pacific. It is the only team to claim a Region II title.
“I’m so proud of our guys but especially for the seniors,” said head coach Mark Bohren. “Fresno Pacific is a good team and played well today. We were fortunate to get the win.”
