RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific kicked off its Golden State Athletic Conference campaign with an impressive 8-1 road win at No. 18-ranked California Baptist Saturday afternoon in Riverside.

With the singles matches kicking off the match Saturday morning, the Cougars clinched the win with victories in 5 of the 6 head-to-head matchups, then swept the doubles to post the 8-1 win.

Senior Jennifer Dao was 1 of the Cougars’ 5 winners at singles and doubles, earning a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marcela Montanha at No. 1 singles before teaming with junior Kim Tran for an 8-6 to complete a doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles.

Senior Peggy Bell and sophomore Katy Jelsma each gave up just 1 game in singles before picking up doubles wins. Bell was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles, then partnered with junior Bay Daniels at No. 1 doubles to post an 8-2 win over Marcela Montanha and Dunya Wren. Jelsma, also a 6-1, 6-0 winner, picked up a point at No. 5 singles and at No. 3 doubles, teaming with sophomore Lindsey Cloninger for an 8-3 win in doubles play.
