GLENDORA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific met up with No. 22-ranked California Baptist in a non-conference rematch of the Cougars’ 8-1 win in Riverside 3 weeks ago, and the results were identical, with the Cougars sweeping all 3 doubles matches and winning 5 of the 6 singles matches to earn the victory Saturday afternoon at Citrus College.
California Baptist’s only point again came at No. 3 singles, but the Cougars posted convincing victories in all 5 of the other singles matches, including matching 6-1, 6-0 victories at No. 1 and 2 singles from Jennifer Dao and Bay Daniels. Daniels teamed with Peggy Bell for a narrow 9-8 win in the top doubles spot, leading an Azusa Pacific sweep of the 3 doubles matches.
Bell was also victorious at No. 4 singles, defeating Nawchali De Silva, 6-2, 6-1, and Jessalyn Lau and Lindsey Cloninger teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the doubles sweep. Lau earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, and Cloninger was the only Cougar to post a complete shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets blanking at No. 6 singles.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 8-1 overall, while California Baptist drops to 6-5 on the season. The Cougars host Baker (Kan.) in another non-conference match before returning to GSAC play with an 11 a.m. visit next Saturday, March 17 to No. 13-ranked Point Loma Nazarene.
