GLENDORA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific cruised to its ninth straight win, taking 96 of 101 games in a dominant 9-0 GSAC win over visiting Biola Saturday morning at Citrus College.
Five singles matches were decided quickly in 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets fashion, and the Cougars won the doubles matches by a combined 25-1 score.
Bay Daniels and Lindsey Cloninger were Azusa Pacific’s only 2 players to post complete shutouts in both singles and doubles, going unbeaten for 20 games worth of action on the day. Daniels teamed with Peggy Bell for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, then scored a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, Cloninger and Katy Jelsma won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles before Cloninger posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles for the Cougars.
Jennifer Dao, Kim Tran and Jessalyn Lau each won their respective singles matches with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Tran and Dao formed the Cougars’ final winning doubles combo at No. 2 doubles, posting an 8-1 win. Jelsma was a straight-sets winner at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 12-1 overall, 6-1 in GSAC play, while Biola drops to 3-11 overall, 0-6 in GSAC play. The Cougars are back in action Tuesday, March 27, when they host Colby (Maine) at 2:30 p.m. at Citrus College in Glendora.
