SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific combined for 4 total doubles points, and the NAIA’s No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific quickly posted a pair of straight-sets wins to send the Cougars to a 5-0 defeat in Friday’s NAIA Region II Women’s Tennis Championship at Point Loma Nazarene.
Azusa Pacific has already qualified for the NAIA Women’s Tennis Championship held May 14-18 in Mobile, Ala., but the Cougars will wait for its official tournament seeding when the official bracket is released on May 9.
Jennifer Dao, whose singles and doubles victories in Thursday’s win over Vanguard helped the Cougars to Friday’s championship, suffered a 6-3, 6-0 defeat at No. 1 singles to Fresno Pacific’s Jelena Pandizic, and Kim Tran was beaten by Anna Karavayeva at No. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-1 margin. The defeats came on the heels of a doubles session in which Fresno Pacific swept all 3 matches by a combined 24-4 margin.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 16-4 on the season, while Fresno Pacific improves to 21-5 overall after earning the region’s automatic bid to the national tournament.
