GLENDORA, Calif. -- Despite dropping singles points at each of the top 3 singles spots, the NAIA’s No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific used depth to its advantage, sweeping the fourth through sixth singles positions, along with No. 3 doubles, in a 5-4 victory over No. 10-ranked California Baptist Saturday afternoon at Citrus College.

Freshman Sheryl Bon, junior Lindsey Cloninger and senior Kim Tran each posted valuable singles and doubles wins to lead the Cougars to the team victory in the GSAC opener. Bon teamed up with senior Bay Daniels to rally to a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles after Cloninger and Tran registered an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Bon, Tran and Cloninger then swept the numbers 4, 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively, in straight sets, to clinch the victory. Daniels and freshman Casey Wetzig dropped 3-set matches in singles, while Katy Jelsma retired from her match to concede the No. 2 singles point.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in GSAC, while California Baptist drops to 1-1 overall, 0-1 GSAC. The Cougars return to action for a pair of GSAC road matches at Biola on Friday, Feb. 22 and Westmont on Saturday, Feb. 23.
