AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior Bay Daniels was named to the NAIA Women’s Tennis All-American first team after leading Azusa Pacific to its fifth straight national quarterfinals appearance. The Cougars are 1 of just 3 NAIA programs to reach the quarterfinals in each of the past 5 seasons.
Joining Daniels in the postseason honors was freshman Sheryl Bon, whose second team selection made her just the second Cougar freshman to ever receive NAIA All-American recognition.
Daniels, a repeat selection after earning NAIA All-American second team honors as a 2007 junior, filled the No. 1 singles role for Azusa Pacific in all 23 of its 2008 matches, went 15-6 in singles play. She also recorded a sparkling 20-2 doubles mark, teaming up with Bon for 17 wins in 19 matches at No. 1 doubles.
Daniels was also Azusa Pacific’s lone recipient of All-GSAC and All-NAIA Region II recognition.
Bon’s collegiate debut netted her NAIA All-American second team status, as the freshman won 12 of her first 13 singles matches and posted a 16-4 singles record on the season while splitting time between the No. 3 and No. 4 singles roles. In doubles, Bon partnered with Daniels for a 19-2 record, going 17-2 at the No. 1 position and 2-0 at the No. 2 spot.
Azusa Pacific posted its program-best fifth straight winning campaign with its 17-6 record, and the Cougars’ 8-1 mark in Golden State Athletic Conference play clinched the program’s sixth conference runner-up finish in the past 8 seasons.
