POMONA, Calif. -- The NAIA’s No. 11-ranked Azusa Pacific picked up its seventh consecutive win in a season-opening match, defeating NCAA Division II’s No. 37-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Natalie McNall helped get the Cougars off to a 2-1 doubles lead, teaming up with junior Sheryl Bon at No. 1 for an 8-2 win over the Broncos’ top doubles tandem of Jennifer Chow and Jackie Trendt. Later, wth the match outcome still hanging in the balance, McNall completed a 3-set win at No. 2 singles (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) that provided the crucial fifth team point that secured Azusa Pacific’s victory.

At the time of McNall’s win, Azusa Pacific led the match 4-3, with the No. 4 singles matchup between senior Jessalyn Lau and the Broncos’ Mallory Brady tied at 3-3 in the third set. With the match outcome decided and darkness approaching, Lau recorded a 7-4 tiebreaker win to claim a 6-4, 5-7, 4-3 (7-4) win that provided the final margin.

Azusa Pacific’s No. 2 doubles tandem, sophomore Leah Hoffee and junior Casey Wetzig, were 8-3 winners over Fallon Blattner and Mallory Brady. Singles winners in straight sets for the Cougars included Wetzig at No. 5 (6-2, 6-0) and sophomore Emily Ignas, who rode the strength of a strong serve to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position.

Azusa Pacific follows its season-opening win with Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference opener, a 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 13) visit to Cal State Northridge, where the Cougars will take on The Master’s College. Cal Poly Pomona, which defeated NCAA Division I UC Riverside to open the 2010 season, falls to 1-1 overall.
