AZUSA, Calif. -- Just a day after defeating a top 15-ranked NCAA Div. III program, the NAIA’s No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific posted another impressive win over a top-15 team with Saturday’s 9-0 sweep of NCAA Div. II’s No. 14-ranked UC San Diego at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
Senior Sheryl Bon-Bakalov led the way with victories at the top singles and doubles spots, posting a 6-2, 7-6 singles win over the Tritons’ Taskeen Bains. She also teamed up with freshman Emily Harris for the 8-3 No. 1 doubles win over Bains and Cindy Dao.
The Cougars were nearly perfect on the afternoon, needing 3 sets in only 1 singles match, which was sophomore Sarita Adhikary’s come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Jacquelyn Davis at the No. 6 position.
Junior Leah Hoffee and senior Casey Wetzig, 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles, each posted straight-set singles wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Harris quickly closed out a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, and junior Natalie McNall completed the singles sweep with a straight-sets win (6-4, 6-3) against Cindy Dao at the No. 2 spot.
UC San Diego’s best chance for a point came at No. 2 doubles, but Azusa Pacific’s tandem of McNall with freshman Kim Koetterheinrich held off the Triton duo of Melissa Breisacher and Jacquelyn Davis in a tiebreaker for the 9-8 win and doubles sweep.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 2-0 on the season, while UC San Diego drops to 0-1. The Cougars are home for 2 more matches before their first road competition, hosting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Feb. 11) and The Master’s (Feb. 15) before traveling to Fullerton for a GSAC matchup with Hope International on Friday, Feb. 18.
