OJAI, Calif. -- A run to the doubles semifinals by an unseeded tandem of junior Natalie McNall with freshman Emily Harris highlighted Azusa Pacific’s women’s tennis contingent at the 111th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament.
Harris and McNall opened their tournament with a 6-2, 7-5 Round of 32 win over Alexandra Scotten and Laura Wade of UC Santa Cruz, and then went to 3 sets for a victory over the No. 4-seeded Cal State Stanislaus duo of Katie Eng and Verena Preikschas.
The duo continued their run with a 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over the sixth-seeded tandem from Cal State L.A., Christie Lau and Larn McShane, to clinch a spot in the semifinals opposite Fresno Pacific’s second-seeded tandem of Marie Boura and Erika Januskova. However, the run ended there in another 3-set battle, with Fresno Pacific moving into the championship against the eventual tournament doubles champion, Point Loma Nazarene’s top pair of Ashley Litchfield and Kristin Strimple.
Harris and McNall also represented the Cougars in the tournament’s singles event. Both won their opening singles matches, and McNall was a victory away from a spot in the quarterfinals. Harris defeated Linfield’s Abby Olbrich, 6-3, 6-2, and she pushed No. 8-seeded Jordan Kimura of Concordia University to 3 sets in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 defeat in the Round of 32. McNall, the tournament’s No. 16-seed, picked up wins over unseeded foes to advance into the Round of 16, where she was narrowly defeated in straight sets by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ No. 7-seeded Kristin Lim, 7-5, 6-4.
Sophomore Sarita Adhikary and freshman Kim Koetterheinrich competed together in doubles play, also, winning their tournament opener against Whittier’s Lauren Gelgur and Maryrose Vigorita in relatively easy fashion (6-1, 6-0). The Cougar tandem exited the tournament in the following round, however, suffering a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to the No. 5-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps duo of Kristin Lim and Crystal Lim.
Azusa Pacific tied the program’s regular-season wins record with a 19-4 campaign, which the Cougars take into their next competition, the 2011 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championships, held May 17-21 in Mobile, Ala.
